The blog isn’t quite visually done. There are a few things I’d like to fix and tweak on. I’ll get there someday
Also please remember that this is a personal blog. Most of what I write is my personal opinion at the time of writing. It might also contain spelling and grammer errors in it.
Recently Doom4 was announced. As a big fan of Doom and been modding Doom3 for years now. I really can’t wait to learn more about it. But I won’t sit and read every article and learn about every monster and weapon it. When it comes to games like this, the more you know before you play it is more harmful then good. When I’m out buying games and checking reviews, just check the scores and quick pros and cons of the games reviewers write. I have many modding ideas for both Rage and Doom4. These ideas have sitting around for years, but a game with the right assets and engine to do it hasn’t been there. This also depends on how The Ruiner Doom3 modification I’m apart of does.
Eventually id tech 4 will go open source. If one were to start up a decent sized mod team now and keep working on it till then, they’d have enough time to release something standalone. Its no small feat to do, but its possible. A decent sized team or a small very active one has enough time to replace all Doom3 assets and bring in enough custom content for it stand alone. I also believe D3 has been one of the most under apreciated games to mod for. There is just so much one can do in it without touching the sdk to make a game.
The Doom3 modification Ruiner has been in development for 14 months now. Its gone through a few major changes in its visual style. Evertytime is for the best. We are around 70% complete as of this writing. That could change if the ability to add in features not thought possible does happen. Its also looking very likely that this could happen. If so, the combat experiece is really going to be something better and pack more depth then Doom3’s did or the average mod in general.
One thing I can for certain is that the current main character model seen isn’t the final one. Designs have been going on for a long time for the final one. It might not even be female. Whatever it ends up as, its going to be what is felt for the gameplay. I have binders of back stories and ideas for comics, novels and games sitting around. Its just a matter of picking one that fits the current game the best. Ruiner’s backstory has recieved some good praise and feels more original then the average demon hunter game setup. There is just so much to exploit and keep making new scenerios with it.
I will end this post with some advice to modders out there. In the last couple of years atomic armadillo has released 1 mod for quake 4, a bunch of custom content for games, various content for other game modifications, and has not one, but 2 mods coming out this year. Be resourcefull and passionate at it… eventually your ideas will come to life. Learn everything you can about the game your modding before doing it and test out new ideas before putting them in your mod to make sure they work and are most importantly, fun. When your in a mod team, or the game business, its not uncommon to do something you didn’t sign up. The more you can do in game creation, the better. Learn a little bit of everything incase you need to do it yourself and to understand your co-workers better when they encounter a problem or explane how they are doing it, why or why not its being done. If your in a team lead position like myself, then knowing a little bit of everything helps. You can sometimes get allot more done yourself and keep moral up by just producing content. Knowing a little bit of everything isn’t the only key. You should also be the master of something such as coding, level making, scripting, or modeling. Having one key skill, plus good understanding of everything else makes you a more attractive & valuable person to work with.
Cheers!
